We encourage all students in the School of Global Integrative Studies to take advantage of education abroad, one of the most beneficial experiences to have at Nebraska.
Jaipur, India: studying Hindi culture at the American Institute of Indian Studies.
Why study abroad?
In addition to experiencing a new country's culture, being abroad allows you to hone a second language, meet new and interesting people, and become more independent.
Students who study abroad are more likely to work effectively in a multicultural workplace, research shows.
Furthermore, intercultural competence, embracing different perspectives, flexibility and adaptability—gained through an education abroad experience—are highly valued in a global economy.
Options
Students have the option to study, complete an internship, or participate in a service-learning program abroad.
- Studying or interning abroad is part of the "global awareness" requirement of the global studies major.
- Students with majors in anthropology or geography can have education abroad courses count (and be substituted) towards program requirements.
Students also have the option of completing a short summer program, a semester, or an academic year abroad.
Mysore, India: studying at the Vivekananda Institute of Indian Studies.
Belize, Central America: visiting archaeological, cultural, and historical sites.
Start with your advisor
Please meet with our academic advisor to discuss how education abroad fits your academic, professional, and personal goals and select among programs offered through the university.
The Education Abroad office will then help you manage the application, find funding, and plan the experience.
