In remembrance of Bruce Rippeteau

Bruce Rippeteau

Bruce Rippeteau, archaeologist and University of Nebraska–Lincoln alumnus ('68), passed away August 21, 2024. He authored numerous articles, papers, and books; became the first State Archaeologist of Colorado in the mid-1970s; founded the National Association of State Archaeologists; led groundbreaking projects as the South Carolina State Archaeologist; and co-founded the Celebrate Freedom Foundation.

As an undergraduate, Bruce helped to establish the Anthropology Group. During retirement, he donated time and support to the Department of Anthropology, including the endowment of a Prize for Great Plains Archaeology and Paleontology and service as an adjunct professor. He received the inaugural Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Arts and Sciences.

"Bruce was a devoted mentor, a pioneering scholar, and an unwavering advocate for education and community," Sophia Perdikaris, chair and professor in the School of Global Integrated Studies, said. "Let us honor his memory by continuing to support education, archaeology, and community engagement."
