Current Research and Projects

Andrew's research focuses on rural place attachment and population sustainability efforts. Specifically, he is interested in the varied reasons why people make the active, intended, and deliberate choice to stay in rural areas. As part of this research, Andrew has conducted surveys in Missouri (2021), Nebraska (2019), and South Dakota (2025) to better understand why people choose to stay in, leave, or return to where they grew up. This research is part of the American Roots Migration Project.

Courses

Andrew teaches a range of human and regional geography courses, as well as introductory courses in physical geography and GIS. Courses taught include Elements of Physical Geography, Geography of Nebraska, Historical Geography of the Great Plains, Introductory Human Geography, Political Geography, and Principles of GIS.
