Chelsea Akyeampong, Ayat Aribi, Farid Farkouh, Brenda Hernandez, and Deanna Mosley have received Gilman scholarships, which will allow them to study abroad this summer.

The students' majors and destinations:

  • Akyeampong, global studies: Rwanda
  • Aribi, economics and global studies: Germany
  • Farkouh, biochemistry: Spain
  • Hernandez, psychology: Czech Republic and France
  • Mosley, biological sciences and French: South Korea

The Gilman scholarship is a nationally competitive award given three times a year by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to undergraduate students seeking to study or intern abroad.

Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs. The program's goal is to allow students to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies -- making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.
