Name: Nicholas Harmon
Major/Minor: Global Studies and Women's and Gender Studies with minors in English, Japanese, Asian Studies, History, Sexuality Studies, and Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs.
Year at UNL: Sophomore

Favorite book and why: This is a difficult choice but I would probably say the Perks of Being a Wallflower. I find all of the characters to be extremely relatable and I love the way it tackles topics like mental illness and sexual abuse.

Favorite movie and why: My favorite movie is Clue because I love a good mystery, it’s hilarious, and the acting is phenomenal. I first watched it when I was a kid and I understood the jokes more and more as I grew up and now I can almost quote the entire movie.

Why Global Studies?
I chose Global Studies because I have always thought the world is bigger than just Nebraska (or the US for that matter) and I think it is very important to understand how events around the world affect each other and me personally. I love taking Professor Coble’s East Asian history classes because they’re the first history classes I have ever really understood and excelled in. For new Global Studies majors, I would suggest finding a specific region and themes that you are truly passionate about because there are so many options that you can’t explore them all (but that said as a double major with six minors I don’t really have much room to explore anything).

Study abroad/internship experience
I intend to study abroad in Osaka, Japan next year and there I will hopefully master the Japanese language. I am currently interning with Lincoln Literacy to help teach English to immigrants and refugees who come from all over the world.

Post-Graduation Plans
After I graduate I hope to teach English in Japan through the JET Program. I’m not sure what I’ll do after that but I can live in Japan for five years through the JET Program so I am hoping to figure something out during that period of time.
